What? There’s More to do Than Skiing in Colorado?
- February 14, 2018
When you think of Colorado, you think of skiing. The two just go hand in hand. But there are tons of other fun things to do in the winter, too. And we’re not just talking about snowboarding!
Here are some fun winter sports that you can do in the Colorado Springs area if you’re looking to switch it up!
One of the world’s oldest sports, snowshoeing dates back to 4000 BC when hunters walked atop knee-deep snow in large, flat shoes. When snowshoeing, you can take a calm walk through an open field or a race through the woods. It’s a great workout! Click here to read a great article with suggestions for where to go!
Speaking of great workouts, you’re sure to work up a sweat if you decided to check out cross-country skiing. To move, you stride forward or side-to-side (a skating motion) with the help of poles. You can traverse flat terrain or, in extreme examples, across mountains. The above article (under snowshoeing) also has some great recommendations on where to cross-country ski!
If you still want to scratch that downhill skiing itch, snow biking is a great sport to try out. Instead of wheels, the bikes are fixed with two skis, with the one in front able to be steered via the handlebars. There aren’t any pedals; instead, you wear smaller skis, about a foot-and-a-half long, on your feet. This gives you four points of contact with the ground. Keep in mind, there aren’t any brakes! You still have to traverse side-to-side in order to slow your momentum as you come down the hill.
If you’re an avid mountain biker, you may have heard of fat biking. Fat bikes are basically mountain bikes that allow you to ride in the snow. The only real difference is some wider parts, such as the forks, which accommodate the wider tires you need in order to traverse the snow. Hard-packed snow rides similarly to a regular trail, but deeper snow will provide more of a challenge. You can put regular tires on your fat bike in the summer, so it can be dual-purpose.
Surely you didn’t think we forgot about ice skating! This time-honored winter tradition is what you make of it. You can leisurely take laps around the rink, and do your best to keep your balance. Or you can put your head down and really get some speed. I’ve found that people prefer if you let them know before you crash into them.
Though it may not seem like it, spring is just around the corner! It’ll soon be time to maintain and beautify the lawn. Keep us in mind when the time comes!
