Best Green Places: Manitou Incline

The Manitou Incline is one of the most challenging hikes in the entire state of Colorado – climbing over 2,000 feet in under a mile – and climbing it is only advised for those who have been cleared for this level of physical exercise by a doctor. With that being said, the Manitou Incline offers one of the most beautiful views of the surrounding area – with a view of open green spaces and fields, forests and trees, rock outcroppings, and even the surrounding residential areas.

The Incline was originally the location of a cable car, that was build to transport materials to build pipelines on Pikes Peak. The Incline went through various uses after that – and since 2013, has been a publically-accessible and popular hike in the Manitou Springs area.

In addition to its fabulous views, the Incline is best known as an challenging workout and has attracted Olympic athletes, extreme runners and other fitness buffs. Military personnel have also used the trail for their training and workouts.

Parking can be a challenge, as it is limited in the Incline Parking lot. A free shuttle is offered from the parking lot of the Tahine Restaurant. The Incline is open from dawn until dusk.

The park features several amenities that visitors enjoy, including a stocked fishing pond, a kid-friendly playground, two picnic pavilions with barbeques, and a trail system. The pond is a favorite for catfish fishing. The trial has two loops that run a little over 3 miles in length, running over a rolling topography. The trails are a favorite for local runners, hikers and even horseback riders, who come to enjoy the beauty of the park and the challenging topography.
